User Guide

Everything Night Screen can do, and how to set it up.

Getting started

  1. Install Night Screen and open it
  2. Follow the on-screen setup and turn on Display over other apps when asked - Night Screen needs this to draw its filter over your screen
  3. Allow notifications when asked, so you can see Night Screen's status and the daily reminder
  4. Back on the home screen, tap the Night Screen switch to turn the filter on

The home screen is a floating card that stays on top of whatever you're doing. Tap the arrow to expand it and reveal the filter options.

Filter modes

Expand the card and choose a mode:

Mode What it does
Dim Light A plain dark overlay that lowers your effective screen brightness, including below your phone's normal minimum setting
Blue Light Filter A warm yellow-orange tint, for reading in bed or reducing blue light at night
Advanced Full manual control - separate red, green and blue sliders so you can mix your own tint

Use the main slider to set overall brightness or filter strength. In Advanced mode, the red, green and blue sliders appear underneath it.

Auto Schedule (Pro)

Auto Schedule turns the filter on and off automatically, without you having to remember. Open Settings → Schedule:

  • Auto Schedule - the on/off switch for the whole feature. This is a Pro feature; turning it on from the free plan offers you the option to upgrade
  • Schedule Mode - Dim Light or Blue Light Filter (Advanced isn't available for the schedule)
  • Sunset Time and Morning Time - the times you want the filter to start and stop. These are clock times that you set yourself; Night Screen does not use your location or calculate an actual sunset for you
  • Transition Duration - how many hours after Sunset Time it takes the filter to reach full strength (1 to 6 hours), so the change happens gradually rather than all at once
  • Max Intensity - a cap on how strong the filter gets at its peak (10% to 100%)

While Auto Schedule is active, the home screen shows its status instead of the manual controls, along with a Pause Until Tomorrow button. This turns the filter off for the rest of the current period without switching Auto Schedule off, and it resumes automatically at the next Sunset Time.

Quick Settings tile

Add the Night Screen tile to your Quick Settings panel (swipe down twice, tap the edit/pencil icon, then drag Night Screen into your tiles) to jump straight to the App from anywhere.

The notification

While the filter or Auto Schedule is running, Night Screen shows a notification with a Stop button, so you can turn it off without opening the App. Android requires this notification for apps that keep a service running in the background.

Daily reminder

Open Settings → Notifications to turn the Daily Reminder on or off and set its Reminder Time. If Night Screen is already running when the reminder time comes around, it's skipped.

System settings

From Settings → System:

  • Hide/Show Notifications - opens Android's notification settings for Night Screen
  • Disable Battery Optimization - opens Android's battery settings so you can exempt Night Screen. This helps Auto Schedule and the daily reminder stay reliable in the background

Language

Choose Night Screen's display language from the language button on the welcome screen. The App supports 24 languages, independently of your device's system language.

About

Open Settings → About for your App version, open-source licences, a link to rate Night Screen on Google Play, a way to report bugs by email, and links to Androxus's other apps.
