The App asks for a permission before opening a file

This happens on Android 9 and earlier only. Tap Okay on the dialog, then allow the storage permission when Android asks. On Android 10 and later this dialog doesn't appear.

If you'd rather not grant it, you can still open PDFs by using "Open with" from a file manager, browser or email instead of the App's own OPEN PDF button.

A PDF won't open, or keeps asking for a password

  • Make sure you're entering the password correctly; PDF Reader asks again if it doesn't match
  • If the file is corrupted or not a valid PDF, it may fail to open regardless of the password

I can't find a PDF I opened before

Check both the Recents and Favorites tabs, and try the search icon with part of the file name. If you moved, renamed or deleted the original file after opening it in PDF Reader, the App's own copy in Recents is unaffected, so it should still be there unless the App's storage was cleared or the App was uninstalled and reinstalled.

A thumbnail isn't showing for a file

Large or complex PDFs can take a moment to render a thumbnail the first time. Scroll away and back, or reopen the App, and it should appear.

Search isn't finding a file I know I opened

The search box matches file names only, not text inside the PDF. Try part of the exact file name instead.

Sharing says "No app found"

This means no app on your device is registered to receive a shared PDF. Install a mail, messaging or file-sharing app capable of receiving files and try again.

Pages scroll the wrong way

PDF Reader can scroll pages vertically (the default) or horizontally. Switch it in Settings > Horizontal scrolling while reading a PDF. See the User Guide for the full list of reading settings.

The screen keeps turning off while I'm reading

Turn on Keep the screen on in the PDF Settings sheet while reading.

PDF Reader always shows a confirmation dialog with the address before opening a link, so nothing opens automatically. Choose "No, thanks" if you don't want to follow it.
